Jaragua National Park (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

Jaragua National Park is located in the Pedernales Province in the southwest of the Dominican Republic and is the largest protected area in the Caribbean, covering approximately 1,374 square kilometers. Established in 1983, it is now a core component of the UNESCO Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo Biosphere Reserve. The park features diverse ecosystems including tropical dry forests, mangroves, and coastal terraces that provide critical habitats for endemic species such as the Hispaniolan solenodon and hutias. Its lagoons, most notably Laguna de Oviedo, are major nesting sites for American flamingos, while the beaches serve as some of the most important breeding grounds for leatherback and hawksbill sea turtles in the region. Historically, the park is famous for its numerous caves containing Taíno pictographs and artifacts, providing evidence of pre-Hispanic indigenous settlements. The region's isolation has helped preserve its unique flora and fauna, making it a vital center for scientific research and conservation efforts.
