Zona Colonial (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

The Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo is the historic central neighborhood of the Dominican Republic's capital and the oldest permanent European settlement in the Americas. Founded in 1498 by Bartholomew Columbus, the district is situated on the western bank of the Ozama River and follows a pioneering grid-style layout that served as a model for many other cities in the New World. In 1990, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptional concentration of 16th-century structures, including the first cathedral, hospital, customs house, and university in the Western Hemisphere. The area covers approximately 5 square kilometers and contains more than 300 historical sites that reflect the early Spanish colonial period. Today, it remains a vital cultural and residential hub, blending its deep historical roots with contemporary commerce and tourism while preserving its authentic limestone architecture and cobblestone streets.
