Saona Island (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

Saona Island is located off the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic and is part of the Cotubanamá National Park (formerly National Park of the East). It was discovered in 1494 by Christopher Columbus during his second voyage and named after the city of Savona in honor of his friend Michele da Cuneo. The island is famous for its pristine white sand beaches, extensive mangrove forests, and crystal-clear turquoise waters. A unique feature of the area is the shallow sandbars known as 'natural pools' where numerous red starfish can be observed in their natural habitat. Saona is a major nesting site for several species of sea turtles, which use the secluded beaches for reproduction. The only permanent settlement is the small fishing village of Mano Juan, where residents live in accordance with strict environmental conservation regulations. Due to its exceptional beauty, the island is one of the most visited destinations in the country, and preserving its fragile marine ecosystem remains a top priority for local authorities.
