💡 Tips
- Being a border town with Haiti, you will pass through military checkpoints on the roads leading here; always carry your original passport.
- The sun is exceptionally intense in this arid southwest region; high-SPF sunscreen, hats, and protective clothing are mandatory.
- If you want to visit the famous Bahía de las Águilas, arrange a boat from nearby Cabo Rojo rather than attempting the very rough overland dirt road.
- The town has a relaxed, remote feel; dinner service ends early, so plan to eat before 9 PM.
🍽 Food
Enjoy some of the most affordable and fresh lobster in the country at the simple seafood restaurants near the waterfront.
Spicy braised goat meat, a specialty of the arid regions, served with rice and beans in local comedores.
Try a fresh conch salad with onions and lime at the beachfront eateries.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
On designated market days, explore the spirited cross-border market for Haitian crafts, textiles, and everyday goods.
While mined further east, local artisan shops often sell beautiful pieces made from this blue Dominican stone.
A short drive from town, this pristine beach provides calm, turquoise waters and is usually very peaceful.
The small, undeveloped oceanfront promenade is excellent for a quiet sunset walk with views stretching towards Haiti.

Pedernales is the remote capital of the province of the same name in the far southwest of the Dominican Republic, located directly on the border with Haiti. The town was officially established as a municipality in 1927, although human settlement in the area dates back much further. Geographically, Pedernales is characterized by an extremely arid climate and a sparse yet ecologically significant landscape, protected by the Jaragua National Park. Nearby is the famous Bahía de las Águilas, considered one of the most pristine beaches in the Caribbean with its white sand and turquoise waters. Economically, the region was long dependent on bauxite mining, but it is now increasingly shifting its focus toward sustainable tourism and fishing. The town serves as a gateway to the natural wonders of the Enriquillo region and as a key outpost for cross-border cultural exchange.
