Baní, the capital of the Peravia province in the southern Dominican Republic, is celebrated nationally as the 'City of Poets' and, most famously, as the 'Mango Capital.' Established in 1764, the town's semi-arid climate provides the great environment for growing over 100 varieties of mangos, which are a cornerstone of the regional economy and international exports. Culturally, Baní is the birthplace of Máximo Gómez, a revered general who played a pivotal role in the struggle for Cuban independence. Geographically, the area is defined by sharp contrasts, ranging from the foothills of the Cordillera Central to the south's dramatic Las Calderas Sand Dunes. These dunes are the largest in the Caribbean and are protected as a unique natural monument. The city is also widely known for its traditional milk-based sweets (dulces) and the annual Mango Festival, which attracts visitors from across the country. Additionally, Baní hosts the salt mines of Puerto Hermoso, where sea salt has been harvested through traditional solar evaporation for centuries.
