Alcázar de Colón (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

The Alcázar de Colón is a magnificent palace located in the Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo and one of the most significant buildings of the early Spanish colonial era. It was constructed between 1510 and 1514 for Diego Columbus, the son of Christopher Columbus and viceroy of Hispaniola. The palace features a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles with Spanish Mudéjar elements and was built from coral limestone without the use of nails. For several decades, it served as the seat of the Spanish colonial government and was the site where numerous expeditions for the conquest of the American mainland were planned. In 1586, the building was heavily damaged during Sir Francis Drake's raid and fell into decline over the following centuries. Following an extensive restoration in the 1950s, the palace now houses the Alcázar de Colón Museum, showcasing a valuable collection of late medieval and Renaissance furniture and artworks from the Columbus family era.
