Altos de Chavón (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

Altos de Chavón is a Mediterranean-style village located in the La Romana province of the Dominican Republic, perched high above the Chavón River. Construction began in 1976 under the direction of Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro and Italian designer Roberto Coppa, aiming to recreate a 16th-century European settlement. The village was built entirely from stone hand-carved by local artisans, blending traditional European aesthetics with Caribbean craftsmanship. Its most iconic feature is the 5,000-seat Greek-style amphitheater, which was inaugurated in 1982 by a performance from Frank Sinatra. The site is also home to the Regional Museum of Archaeology, showcasing over 3,000 Taíno artifacts, and a globally recognized school of design affiliated with Parsons in New York. The intricate wrought ironwork, cobblestone streets, and coral stone buildings serve as a testament to the region's artistic heritage, making it a vital cultural hub that continues to host international concerts and art exhibitions today.
