Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

The Basilica Cathedral of Our Lady of Altagracia, located in Salvaleón de Higüey, stands as the preeminent religious landmark of the Dominican Republic. This modernist masterpiece was designed by French architects André Dunoyer de Segonzac and Pierre Dupré, and was completed in 1971 after nearly twenty years of construction. Its most striking feature is a massive 69-meter-high concrete arch that symbolizes praying hands, visible from miles away across the Higüey landscape. The basilica was built to succeed a 1572 shrine and accommodate the increasing influx of pilgrims. Inside, the high altar holds the venerated 16th-century painting of the Virgin of Altagracia, the patroness of the Dominican people. The structure is adorned with grand bronze doors plated in gold and lively stained-glass windows depicting biblical narratives. Every January 21st, the site draws thousands of devotees from across the nation and beyond, making it the most significant pilgrimage site in the Caribbean region.
