Sierra de Bahoruco National Park (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

Sierra de Bahoruco National Park in the Dominican Republic's Pedernales province spans 1,100 km², protecting a critical transition zone between dry forest and cloud forest. The park's highest point, Loma del Toro, reaches 2,367 m. It harbors the world's largest population of Ricord's iguana (Cyclura ricordii), a species with fewer than 5,000 individuals. The park also hosts the endangered Hispaniolan parakeet (Aratinga chloroptera). Over 300 bird species have been recorded, including the endemic Bay-breasted cuckoo. The park's limestone soils support rare orchids and cacti. Annual rainfall varies from 400 mm in the lower areas to over 2,500 mm on the peaks. The park is part of the Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo Biosphere Reserve.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reached primarily via the southwestern remote towns of Duvergé, Pedernales, or Polo. A high-clearance sturdy 4x4 vehicle is strictly necessary to reliably navigate the very rough, highly degraded mountain access roads.
📅
Best season
The dry season, spanning roughly from December to April, is predictably the best and safest time for a visit. Heavy sudden rains can quickly and dangerously wash out the unpaved, steep mountain dirt roads.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Highly diverse and rapidly changing, ranging from bone-dry, thorny desert scrubland at lower extreme elevations to dense, consistently misty pine forests and rich cloud forests in the higher mountainous reaches.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy professional hiking boots, multiple layers of adaptable clothing to handle significant temperature shifts, and plenty of water are genuinely essential. Dedicated birdwatchers should most definitely bring high-quality binoculars.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles can usually be safely parked at the designated local ranger stations or eco-lodges near the park boundaries before continuing deeper on foot or via specialized highly capable local transport.
⚠️
Safety
It is strongly advised to travel with a local guide who intimately knows the complex, confusing terrain. The park is remarkably vast and remote; ensure your specialized vehicle is in absolute excellent mechanical condition.
⏱️
Time needed
A thorough, satisfying visit to properly appreciate the intensely diverse ecosystems or for dedicated, patient birdwatching generally requires a very full active day, or multiple days if independently camping or staying closely nearby.
