Gales Point, also referred to as Gales Point Manatee, is a historic Creole settlement situated on a narrow peninsula within the Southern Lagoon in the Belize District. The community has a distinct history as a sanctuary for runaway slaves, or Maroons, who established a hidden society within the inaccessible lagoon network during the 18th and 19th centuries. Geographically, the village is almost entirely surrounded by water, making it one of the most significant ecological habitats for the West Indian Manatee. The surrounding waters have been designated as a wildlife sanctuary to protect the breeding grounds of these endangered aquatic mammals. Culturally, Gales Point is famous for preserving the Sambai drumming tradition, a ritualistic fertility dance that has nearly vanished elsewhere in Belize. The local economy relies on subsistence fishing and the harvesting of forest products. Despite the challenges of its remote location and minimal infrastructure, the village has emerged as a center for community-based eco-tourism. Residents are also celebrated for their artisanal drum-making and the production of traditional wines made from local wild fruits.
