David's Drill (Tuvalu)

Weather…

David's Drill is a historic scientific site on Funafuti Atoll, established by the Royal Society of London in the late 19th century. Directed by Professor Edgeworth David, several drilling attempts were conducted between 1896 and 1898 to prove Charles Darwin's theory on the formation of coral atolls. Darwin hypothesized that atolls grew upon subsiding volcanic islands, which would be confirmed by finding deep layers of coral debris. The expedition eventually reached a depth of 1,114 feet (340 meters), retrieving only coral material, which provided significant evidence for Darwin's hypothesis. Today, the location is marked by a memorial plaque and stands as a testament to early Pacific scientific exploration. The core samples from Funafuti are still preserved in museums and referenced in contemporary geological studies. This site represents a major milestone in the history of science and the collaboration between biology and geomorphology.
