Waslala is an isolated, deeply mountainous municipality located on the border between the Matagalpa Department and the RACCN. Accessible only via difficult, unpaved mountain roads, it serves as a remote commercial hub for dozens of small, scattered farming communities set in the rainforest. During the 1980s, Waslala was notoriously known as one of the most violent and heavily contested epicenters of the Contra War, suffering immense casualties and destruction. Today, it has transitioned into a peaceful region known for producing some of the highest-quality organic cacao and coffee in the country, though it remains severely underdeveloped in terms of basic infrastructure.
