Siuna is a historically significant mining town located within the Mining Triangle of Nicaragua's North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region (RACCN). The town owes its founding and rise to the vast gold deposits discovered in the late 19th century, which led to the opening of the famous 'La Luz' mine. Geographically, Siuna is situated amidst a hilly rainforest region and serves as the western gateway to the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve, Central America's largest protected forest area. During the mid-20th century, Siuna was one of Nicaragua's most modern cities, featuring infrastructure funded by foreign mining conglomerates. Following the nationalization of the mines in the 1970s and the subsequent decline of industrial gold extraction, the town transitioned into a regional center for education and agriculture. Today, Siuna is home to a campus of the URACCAN university, which plays a critical role in educating indigenous and Afro-Nicaraguan populations. The local culture is multi-ethnic, uniting Mestizos, Miskitos, and Mayangnas in a lively social fabric. The economy now primarily relies on cattle ranching, cacao cultivation, and artisanal mining (güirisería).
