The Cayos Cochinos Marine Reserve is a dramatic archipelago located in the Caribbean Sea, about 30 kilometers northeast of La Ceiba, Honduras. Established as a protected area in 1993, it comprises two main islands, Cayo Mayor and Cayo Menor, along with 13 smaller coral cays. The reserve is an integral part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest coral reef in the world. Its waters are renowned for their extraordinary clarity and biological richness, making it a premier destination for diving and marine research. On land, the islands are famous for the endemic Pink Boa (Boa constrictor imperator), a unique sub-species found nowhere else on Earth. The local Garifuna communities inhabit some of the cays, maintaining their traditional fishing practices and culture within the framework of strict environmental guidelines. Managed by the Honduras Coral Reef Foundation, the reserve limits visitor numbers to preserve its fragile ecosystems, making Cayos Cochinos a symbol of pristine Caribbean nature and cultural preservation.
