Cerro Azul Meámbar National Park, commonly known by its acronym PANACAM, is situated on the eastern side of Lake Yojoa in central Honduras. Established in 1987, the park covers an area of approximately 312 square kilometers, with elevations ranging from 415 to 2,047 meters. The park is celebrated for its dramatic landscapes, transitioning from tropical rainforests to mist-covered mountain peaks. PANACAM is a premier destination for birdwatchers, with over 250 bird species documented within its borders, including toucans and parrots. A well-maintained trail system leads visitors across suspension bridges and to spectacular waterfalls such as 'El Tornillito.' The park's strategic location creates a humid microclimate that sustains lush vegetation and freshwater streams year-round. It also functions as a vital ecological corridor connecting various ecosystems in the region.

Getting there

The national park is primarily accessed from the main highway connecting Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, near Lake Yojoa. A well-marked secondary road typically leads visitors straight up to the main visitor center and trailheads.

Best season

The dry season, running from December to April, provides the most reliable conditions for hiking without heavy downpours. During the rainy season, the cloud forest becomes incredibly lush and animated, but trails can be exceptionally muddy.

Trails here wind through a dense, humid cloud forest ecosystem, featuring varying degrees of incline and numerous wooden steps. The paths are generally well-maintained but often cross small streams and mossy, slippery terrain.

Lightweight, breathable rain gear is highly recommended due to the constant moisture typical of this specific environment. Sturdy trail running shoes or hiking boots are required, and insect repellent is absolutely essential year-round.

Safe parking is usually provided directly at the primary visitor center where visitors register and obtain park information. The designated areas are generally spacious enough to accommodate both private cars and larger tour buses.

The high humidity and constant moisture make many wooden boardwalks and natural rock surfaces extremely slippery. Hikers must stay strictly on designated trails to avoid becoming disoriented in the remarkably dense forest foliage.

Exploring the standard loop trails usually takes between three and five hours, depending on one's pace and time spent at observation points. A full day is easily spent if you wish to enjoy birdwatching and completely immerse yourself in the natural ambiance.
