Laguna El Jocotal, situated at the foot of the Chaparrastique volcano in the San Miguel Department, is one of Central America's most significant wetlands. Since 1976, it has been El Salvador's first site designated under the Ramsar Convention for wetlands of international importance. The lagoon covers a water surface of about 500 hectares, which fluctuates with the seasons, and provides a habitat for over 150 different bird species, including many migratory birds from North America. The floating vegetation islands are particularly notable, serving as handy nesting grounds for waterfowls such as the fulvous whistling-duck. The surrounding landscape is characterized by lava rocks from past eruptions of the San Miguel volcano, creating a unique ecological niche. For the local community, the lagoon is a vital resource for artisanal fishing and tourism. The area is hailed as a model for community-based conservation, where residents actively participate in protecting nesting sites.

Best season
The best time to visit is the dry season from November to April, when the lagoon holds less water and waterbirds concentrate easily. During the rainy season (May-October) heron and stork populations are particularly high.
Best time of day
Early morning hours are when birds are most active, and the lagoon reflects the warm morning light. Late afternoon also features good opportunities as birds return to their resting sites.
Etiquette
Trampling the shoreline vegetation is prohibited to avoid disturbing waterbird nesting sites. Do not feed the animals and avoid any noise that might startle shy species.
What to bring
A waterproof bag to protect binoculars and camera is useful, as humidity can be high. Comfortable closed-toe shoes are recommended for safe movement on uneven terrain.
Getting there
Laguna El Jocotal is about 15 kilometers east of San Miguel, reached via a paved road leading to the north side. From there, the shoreline areas can be explored on foot.
What to expect
Waterbirds are often well camouflaged among reeds and lilies - take time to spot any movement. With quiet behavior, birds quickly become accustomed to your presence and come closer.
