Located in the Usulután Department, Jiquilisco is a significant agricultural and ecological hub in El Salvador. It is primarily famous for the Bay of Jiquilisco, the largest estuary in the country, which was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a Ramsar site in 2005. The town's economy is deeply rooted in the cultivation of basic grains like corn and beans, as well as fishing and salt extraction. Historically, the area was inhabited by the Lenca people before the Spanish conquest, and its name translates to "Place of Indigo Growers" in Nahuatl. Today, the town serves as a gateway for ecotourism, offering access to mangrove forests that provide habitat for numerous endangered species, including the hawksbill sea turtle. The urban center maintains a traditional Salvadoran layout with a central park and a colonial-style church dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption.
