Laguna de Olomega (El Salvador)

Weather…

Laguna de Olomega, located in eastern El Salvador, is the largest freshwater body in the region and an ecological gem of international importance. Spanning the departments of San Miguel and La Unión, it was added to the list of Ramsar wetlands due to its rich biodiversity. Primarily fed by the Rio Grande de San Miguel, the lagoon covers an area of approximately 24 square kilometers. Surrounded by rolling hills and moist forests, it provides a sanctuary for endangered species like caimans and various types of iguanas. Historically, the lagoon served as an important center for pre-Columbian cultures, as evidenced by archaeological remains found in the vicinity. Today, it is a vital source of livelihood for local fishing communities who catch tilapia and other native fish species. The pretty landscape, dotted with small islands, also makes Olomega a prime destination for ecotourism and bird watching enthusiasts.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from November to April is best, as the water area shrinks and birds concentrate in a smaller space. During the rainy season (May-October) the lagoon expands, offering stopover habitat for many migratory birds.
🌅
Best time of day
Dawn is the most active time, as birds begin their foraging or hunting forays. Late afternoon before sunset sees many species returning to their roosting trees, providing rewarding sightings.
📜
Etiquette
Do not disturb the local fishermen or enter private docks - the lagoon is also used economically. Remain quiet and do not litter into the water or along the shore.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with good light transmission are important, as many birds swim far out on the water. Sun protection and a hat are advisable, especially during the dry season with intense sunshine.
🧭
Getting there
The lagoon is about 12 kilometers southwest of San Miguel, reached via the highway towards El Carmen. From there, an unpaved road leads to the northern shore, passable by normal car.
🦌
What to expect
Birds are often only observable from a distance, as fishing boats and human activity make them wary. Find a quiet spot on the shore and wait for the animals to come closer again.
