Alegría is located in the department of Usulután and is one of the most photogenic destinations in El Salvador. The city is situated in the Sierra Tecapa at an altitude of over 1,200 meters and is famous for the Laguna de Alegría, an emerald-green crater lake within the Tecapa volcano. This lagoon is often referred to as the Jewel of Central America and is known for its high sulfur content. Historically, the town was originally named Tecapa but was later renamed in honor of the priest José Salvador Alegría. Alegría is also known as the birthplace of the famous Salvadoran writer Alberto Masferrer, whose house is now a museum. The city bears the nickname City of a Thousand Flowers, a title bestowed upon it by the Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral. The economy is based on tourism and coffee cultivation, with the cool temperatures and lush vegetation attracting visitors. The city's streets are adorned with flowers, and the architecture has retained a characterful colonial touch. Numerous viewpoints offer expansive views over the Lempa Valley and the Pacific Ocean.
