Monkey River is one of the most significant coastal rivers in southern Belize, emptying into the Caribbean Sea in the Toledo District. The river is famous for its dense riparian rainforests, which house an extraordinary variety of wildlife, most notably the vocal Black Howler Monkeys. A boat cruise on the river has visitors the chance to spot crocodiles, iguanas, various species of herons, and with some luck, even jaguars on the banks. Monkey River Village at the mouth serves as the starting point for these excursions and has a long history dating back to the woodcutters and banana barons of the 19th century. The region is now a hub for ecotourism, supporting the local economy while contributing to the protection of the fragile ecosystem. The river mouth is also an important area for manatees. Best season
The dry season from December to April is optimal, as water levels in the Monkey River are lower and animals concentrate along the banks. In the rainy season (June-November) howler monkeys and birds are also active, but visibility can be limited by dense foliage.
Best time of day
Early morning from around 6 a.m. howler monkeys are especially loud and active - their roar can be heard for miles. Late afternoon hours are also good for spotting crocodiles and water birds basking in the sun.
Etiquette
During the boat ride, always remain seated and hold onto the sides - the vehicle may rock due to waves. Do not litter the river or feed any animals; the river is a fragile ecosystem.
What to bring
Binoculars with 8-10× magnification are well-suited for spotting howler monkeys in the canopy and crocodiles on the banks. Bring waterproof bags, insect repellent, and sunscreen, as sun exposure is strong on the water.
Getting there
Tours usually depart from the small town of Monkey River Town, reachable by boat from Placencia or Independence. Alternatively, you can drive to the dock and rent a boat there.
What to expect
Howler monkeys are loud but often hard to see in the dense canopy - ask guides to point out exact locations. Crocodiles often lie motionless on the bank, easily overlooked; watch for their eyes and nostrils protruding from the water.
