Monkey River Town is a historic coastal village in the Stann Creek District of southern Belize, situated at the mouth of the Monkey River. Formally incorporated as a town in 1891, it was once a booming center for the banana and timber industries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, it is a quiet, traditional Kriol (Creole) village known primarily for its ecotourism, offering river tours to spot black howler monkeys, manatees, and diverse tropical birds. The residents maintain a lifestyle closely connected to the sea and the river, relying on small-scale fishing and tourism. A significant modern challenge for the community is coastal erosion, which has significantly altered the shoreline over the past few decades. Accessible mostly by boat from Placencia or via a rugged inland road, the village gives a sense of seclusion and untouched natural beauty. Surrounded by mangroves and lush jungle, Monkey River Town remains one of the last bastions of authentic coastal Creole culture in southern Belize.
