The Bladen Nature Reserve in southern Belize is often referred to as the 'crown jewel' of the country's protected areas. It is one of the most pristine and least disturbed areas of tropical rainforest in all of Central America. The reserve is located in a steep, mountain-ringed valley and is extremely inaccessible, which has contributed to its exceptional state of conservation. The biodiversity here is immense, including many rare and endangered species. Due to its extreme sensitivity and importance to science, access to the Bladen Nature Reserve is strictly restricted and only possible for research purposes with a special permit. It serves as a vital reference site for scientists studying intact tropical ecosystems and is a crucial link in the network of protected areas in the Maya Mountains.
