Deep River Hills

The Deep River Hills, situated in Belize's Toledo District, are a remote and wild series of forest-clad limestone hills. They surround the Deep River, a pristine waterway that flows from the foothills of the Maya Mountains eastward to the Caribbean Sea. The area is defined by its extreme ruggedness and inaccessibility, which has left its ecosystem almost entirely intact. These hills are part of the Deep River Forest Reserve, a protected area known for its high biodiversity. The forests are a haven for large mammals such as jaguars and tapirs, as well as a rich variety of birdlife. The combination of undisturbed forest, clean water, and a complex geological landscape makes the Deep River Hills a critical area for conservation and scientific research in southern Belize.
