The Chiquibul Forest is the largest contiguous tropical forest in Belize, covering a significant portion of the south of the country. Getting there
Access to this immense forest is predominantly via rugged dirt logging roads originating from the western highlands. A robust four-wheel-drive vehicle and a skilled local driver are almost always required to navigate the area.
Best season
Travel is highly recommended during the dry season when the muddy interior roads are actually passable. Heavy rainfall can rapidly wash out routes and make deep jungle access significantly more treacherous and miserable.
Terrain & paths
The terrain is incredibly diverse, featuring deep river gorges, steep forested hills, and complex limestone cave systems. Trails are rarely marked, deeply uneven, and heavily obscured by aggressive tropical vegetation.
What to bring
Reliable jungle trekking gear is essential, including sturdy waterproof boots, long moisture-wicking trousers, and abundant insect repellent. Packing extra food, a detailed physical map, and ample water is deeply critical.
Parking
Designated parking does not exist within the deep forest interior. Vehicles are usually parked at official ranger stations or established research camps located on the fringes of the protected national park.

Never attempt to explore this vast wilderness without an experienced, certified local guide due to the absolute lack of trails. Wildlife encounters and rapidly changing weather pose genuine, immediate risks in this remote zone.
