Casco Viejo (Panama)

Weather…

Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Antiguo or San Felipe, is the historic district of Panama City, established in 1673 following the near-total destruction of the original city (Panama Viejo) by pirates. The district was relocated to a small peninsula that offered better strategic defense and features a unique blend of Spanish colonial architecture, French influences from the canal construction era, and Neoclassical styles. Key landmarks include the Metropolitan Cathedral with its mother-of-pearl towers, the National Theatre, and the Palacio de las Garzas, the official presidential residence. In 1997, UNESCO designated Casco Viejo as a World Heritage site. Over the past few decades, the area has undergone extensive revitalization, with many dilapidated colonial mansions being meticulously restored into boutique hotels, high-end restaurants, and museums. Despite this modernization, it retains its historic charm with narrow cobblestone streets and spirited facades, serving as the cultural and tourism heart of the capital.
