Pearl Islands (Panama)

Weather…

The Pearl Islands (Archipiélago de las Perlas) consist of over 200 islands and islets located in the Gulf of Panama, approximately 50 kilometers off the mainland coast. The archipelago was discovered in 1513 by Vasco Núñez de Balboa, who named the islands after the bountiful pearls harvested by the indigenous population. While Isla del Rey is the largest island in the chain, Isla Contadora is the most developed for tourism, having gained international fame in the 1960s and 70s as an elite destination. Historically, the islands gained significance in 1983 when the Contadora Group was formed there to facilitate peace negotiations during the Central American crises. Geographically, the islands are characterized by white sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters teeming with marine life. Between July and October, the archipelago becomes a major breeding ground for humpback whales, making it a premier location for whale watching. Many of the uninhabited islets remain pristine sanctuaries for sea birds and coral reefs.
