Panamá Viejo (Panama)

Weather…

Panamá Viejo contains the archaeological remains of the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas, founded on August 15, 1519, by Pedrarias Dávila. The city functioned as a critical strategic hub for the Spanish Empire, serving as the departure point for expeditions to conquer the Inca Empire in Peru and as a primary transit point for gold and silver headed to Europe. In 1671, the city was attacked and looted by the English pirate Henry Morgan, leading to its near-total destruction by fire and forcing the population to relocate to what is now Casco Viejo. The ruins, which cover approximately 28 hectares, include the prominent tower of the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and several convents and government buildings. UNESCO designated the site as a World Heritage Site in 1997, and it now operates as an open-air museum. Extensive archaeological work continues to uncover the pre-Columbian and colonial history of the site.
