Ancón Hill (Panama)

Weather…

Cerro Ancón is a 199-meter-high hill in Panama City that provides a strategic overlook of the Panama Canal and the historic city center. During the U.S. administration of the Canal Zone, the hill served as the seat of military and civil governance, with a massive U.S. flag flying at its summit. Following the signing of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties in 1977, the gradual return of the site to Panama began, culminating on December 31, 1999. Today, the hill is designated as a protected nature area and hosts a surprising variety of wildlife, such as sloths, coatis, and toucans, despite its proximity to the urban core. The name commemorates Pedro de Ancón, a Spanish navigator who explored the area in the 16th century. Visitors hike the trails to the summit, where a monumental Panamanian flag now flies permanently, serving as a symbol of national sovereignty and the end of colonial presence.
