The Faro a Colón is a monumental structure located in Santo Domingo Este, serving as both a monument and a mausoleum dedicated to Christopher Columbus. The design was created by British architect Joseph Lea Gleave, whose concept won an international competition in 1931. Construction, however, did not begin until 1986 and was completed in 1992 to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas. The building is shaped like a horizontal cross and is constructed of reinforced concrete, measuring approximately 210 meters in length. A hallmark of the monument is its powerful lighting system, which projects a cross-shaped beam of light into the sky that can be seen from as far away as Puerto Rico under clear conditions. Inside, the monument houses various exhibition rooms representing American nations and a grand sarcophagus containing the explorer's remains, though their authenticity is famously contested by Spain.
