💡 Tips

  • Neiba is the grape capital of the Dominican Republic; temperatures here in the Enriquillo Valley are extremely high, so stay hydrated.
  • The local wine is sweet and different from European varieties; approach it with an open mind as a cultural tasting experience.
  • When visiting the nearby balnearios (natural spring pools), keep in mind they get very crowded with locals on Sunday afternoons with loud music.
  • Bring insect repellent, as the agricultural surroundings and nearby lakes attract mosquitoes, especially at dusk.

Neiba is the capital of the Bahoruco province in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, situated within the fertile Neiba Valley. Officially founded in 1743, the city is recognized nationwide as the center of viticulture, as the arid climate provides well-suited conditions for the cultivation of table grapes. Geographically, Neiba is located near Lake Enriquillo, the largest inland lake in the Caribbean, which lies approximately 40 meters below sea level. The region is flanked by the Sierra de Neiba and Sierra de Bahoruco mountain ranges, creating a unique ecological diversity. In addition to grapes, the area produces coffee, bananas, and various vegetables.
