Sabana Yegua is a modern municipality in the Azua province with a unique origin story. The town was re-established at its current location in the 1970s to relocate residents who were displaced from their original villages due to the construction of the Sabana Yegua Dam. This planned settlement resulted in a regular urban layout featuring wide streets and organized residential blocks. Today, Sabana Yegua serves as a hub for intensive agriculture, benefiting significantly from the irrigation systems provided by the dam. The surrounding fields produce large quantities of tomatoes, onions, and bananas for the national market. The municipality has a growing infrastructure, including schools and health centers that support its expanding population. Despite its relatively short history, the town has developed a strong sense of community identity, often celebrated through sporting events and local festivals. Geographically, Sabana Yegua is situated in a fertile plain, regarded as one of the most productive agricultural zones in the southern Dominican Republic.
