Villa Jaragua is a municipality in the Bahoruco province of the southwestern Dominican Republic, situated on the northern shore of Lake Enriquillo. The town's name honors the indigenous Taíno chiefdom of Xaragua, famously ruled by Queen Anacaona. The regional geography is one of extremes, bordered by the rugged Sierra de Neiba mountains to the north and the hyper-saline waters of Lake Enriquillo, the lowest point in the Caribbean, to the south. Local livelihoods are predominantly agricultural, with grape and banana cultivation thriving in irrigated sectors. Villa Jaragua is well-known for its 'Cachones,' or natural springs, which provide cool, fresh mountain water and serve as vital social hubs and oases in the arid landscape. The town maintains a deep connection to its indigenous roots and traditional rural culture. Its proximity to the Isla Cabritos National Park makes it a key gateway for eco-tourists interested in the area's unique flora and fauna.
