Barranco is the southernmost Garifuna village in Belize, located on the coast of the Toledo District near the border with Guatemala. The community is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and as the birthplace of the legendary musician Andy Palacio, who brought Garifuna culture to global prominence. Historically, Barranco was established in the mid-19th century and has maintained its authentic character as a fishing and farming village to this day. Its geographic location on the Amatique Bay provides access to pristine waters and rainforests, making the settlement a destination for ecotourism and culture seekers. Residents intensely preserve their traditions, including the Garifuna language, music, and ritual dances such as the Dugu. Economically, life in Barranco is based on subsistence farming, artisanal fishing, and the cultivation of root crops like cassava. Despite its relative isolation, Barranco remains a spiritual and cultural hub for the Garifuna nation, symbolizing the resilience and identity of this unique ethnic group.
