Crique Sarco is one of the most remote and traditional settlements in the Toledo District of far southern Belize. The village is located on the banks of the Temash River, deep within the Sarstoon-Temash National Park, making it an ecologically sensitive and protected site. The community is inhabited almost exclusively by Q'eqchi' Maya, who maintain a lifestyle deeply rooted in their centuries-old traditions. The isolation of Crique Sarco means that access is often only possible via unpaved tracks or by boat, which has shielded the village from the heavy influences of modern development. Residents live primarily on subsistence farming, river fishing, and hunting, employing sustainable indigenous methods. Geographically, the village is situated only a few kilometers from the Guatemalan border in a dense rainforest environment. In recent years, the community has been actively involved in advocating for land rights and the protection of their ancestral territory. Despite its small population of approximately 250 residents, Crique Sarco has a strong social fabric and its own primary school. The village stands as a significant example of preserving indigenous autonomy within a protected ecosystem.
