Cumaca is a remote mountain settlement located in the Northern Range of Trinidad, renowned for its extraordinary natural beauty and scientific importance. Deeply embedded in the lush rainforests, the village is best known for the Cumaca Caves, which house one of the largest colonies of Oilbirds (Guacharos) in the Caribbean. These unique nocturnal birds live in total darkness and use echolocation to navigate, attracting ornithologists and researchers from across the globe. The history of Cumaca is defined by its isolation and the resilience of its community, who traditionally cultivate cocoa and coffee on the steep mountain slopes. Geographically, the region is characterized by deep limestone gorges, sinkholes, and numerous waterfalls that feed the pristine Cumaca River. The difficult access to the village has ensured that the indigenous flora and fauna remains largely undisturbed, preserving a critical ecosystem.
