The Arippo Valley is a deep, ecologically diverse valley positioned in the Northern Range of Trinidad, leading up to the nation's highest peak, El Cerro del Aripo. The valley is renowned for its remarkable limestone karst topography, lush rainforests, and crystal-clear mountain streams. It is home to the famous Arippo Caves, located at an elevation of approximately 800 meters, which house one of the world's most significant colonies of Oilbirds (Steatornis caripensis). Historically, the valley was a thriving center for cocoa production during the 19th century, with many former estates now absorbed back into the natural forest. Today, it is a premier destination for birdwatchers and naturalists, offering sightings of rare species like the Channel-billed Toucan and various trogons. The Arippo River flows through the valley, carving out natural pools and waterfalls that are popular for eco-tourism. The valley serves as a critical watershed and a sanctuary for high-altitude flora, including rare ferns and epiphytes.
