Matelot is one of the most remote villages on Trinidad's northern coast, serving as the eastern terminus of the coastal road from Blanchisseuse. Its name is derived from the French word for 'sailor,' pointing to the area's maritime history and early French settler influence. The village is almost entirely enclosed by the dense rainforests of the Northern Range and is reached via a winding road that provides spectacular oceanic vistas. Matelot is famous for its untouched beaches and the mouth of the Matelot River, which is prized for its crystal-clear waterfalls and swimming holes further inland. The local population traditionally relies on artisanal fishing and cocoa farming. Because of its seclusion, a resilient, self-sufficient community has developed, dedicated to preserving their cultural heritage and the pristine natural environment.
