Grande Riviere is a remote village located on the northeastern coast of Trinidad, globally recognized as one of the most critical nesting sites for the endangered Leatherback sea turtle. Geographically, the community is set between the steep, forested ridges of the Northern Range and the Atlantic Ocean, where the Grande Riviere River meets the sea. The village's history was originally rooted in the production of cocoa and coffee, but the collapse of these industries led to decades of economic hardship. In recent years, however, Grande Riviere has emerged as a premier example of community-led ecotourism. During the nesting season from March to August, thousands of giant turtles emerge onto the shores to lay their eggs. The local population is actively engaged in conservation efforts, making the village a vital hub for international researchers and nature enthusiasts focused on marine preservation.
