Devil's Pond (Romania)

Weather…

Devil's Pond (Balta Dracului) is a unique geological monument located in the heart of Covasna, representing a spectacular manifestation of post-volcanic activity. It is not a typical pond but rather a mofetta basin filled with mud and carbonated water, where CO2 from the depths constantly bubbles at the surface. During the 18th and 19th centuries, several documented eruptions occurred, forcefully ejecting gas and mud to significant heights. The first detailed scientific description was authored in 1881 by the geologist Franz Herbich. At the beginning of the 20th century, the basin was fortified with stone walls to protect the town center and facilitate public viewing. Although the water appears to be boiling due to the gas discharge, it remains cold, consistent with ground temperatures. Today, Devil's Pond is a protected geological reserve and serves as a primary visible symbol of the volcanic forces that power the region's famous spa treatments.
