Eagles' Lake (Romania)

Weather…

Eagles' Lake (Lacul Vulturilor), also popularly known as the 'Bottomless Lake', is a periglacial lake situated in the Siriu Mountains at an elevation of 1,420 meters. Located at the foot of the Mălâia Peak, the lake covers an area of about 0.5 hectares and has a maximum depth of 2.5 meters. Despite its folkloric name, the lake does have a solid bottom; the myth arose from local tales of an underground passage connecting it to the Danube. Its common name was popularized by the writer Alexandru Vlahuță, who described a legend stating that eagles come here in the spring to teach their young how to fly and to wash their feathers in order to rejuvenate. The surrounding area is ecologically significant as it marks one of the southernmost habitats of the chamois in the Romanian Carpathians. The landscape is characterized by alpine meadows and steep rocky slopes, offering wide-open views. The lake remains a remote destination, accessible only via hiking trails or off-road vehicles.
