Isla del Rey (Panama)

Weather…

Isla del Rey is the largest island in the Pearl Archipelago within the Gulf of Panama, covering an area of approximately 234 square kilometers. Located about 100 kilometers southeast of Panama City, it is the country's second-largest island after Isla Coiba. Historically, the island was renowned for its exceptional wealth of pearls, which gave the archipelago its name; the Spanish originally christened it 'Isla de las Perlas'. The largest settlement on the island is San Miguel, which functions as the administrative center for the Balboa District. Geographically, the island is characterized by dense tropical forests, rolling hills, and extensive coastal stretches featuring mangroves and coral reefs. Today, Isla del Rey serves as a significant sanctuary for numerous marine bird species and a hub for commercial fishing in the resource-rich waters of the Pacific. Its relatively low level of tourism development compared to neighboring islands has helped preserve its original natural state.
