Port Royal (Jamaica)

Weather…

Port Royal was the commercial center of Jamaica during the 17th century and ranked as one of the wealthiest and most influential cities in the Caribbean. Its strategic location at the entrance of Kingston Harbour made it a vital base for British privateers and notorious pirates such as Henry Morgan. On June 7, 1692, a catastrophic earthquake caused two-thirds of the city to sink into the sea, an event often interpreted by contemporaries as divine retribution for the city's perceived wickedness. Today, the area is a quiet fishing village, yet the underwater ruins constitute one of the most important archaeological sites in the Western Hemisphere. Visitors can explore Fort Charles, which survived the disaster and now serves as a museum documenting the city's turbulent naval history. The site remains on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list, representing a unique time capsule of 17th-century colonial life and maritime trade.
