Fort Charles (Jamaica)

Weather…

Fort Charles is the oldest and most significant defensive structure in Port Royal, Jamaica, constructed immediately following the English conquest of the island in 1655. Originally named Fort Cromwell, it was renamed in honor of King Charles II after the restoration of the British monarchy. The fort was strategically positioned at the entrance of Kingston Harbour to defend what was then the wealthiest and most notorious city in the Caribbean against pirates and rival colonial powers. The fort's unique ship-like shape is a notable architectural feature, and it is famous for having withstood the catastrophic 1692 earthquake that submerged much of Port Royal. Within its walls lies 'Nelson’s Quarterdeck', where a young Horatio Nelson, the future Admiral, served in 1779. Today, Fort Charles operates as a maritime museum, showcasing artifacts from the golden age of piracy and British naval history. The massive cannon batteries remain in place, alongside the 'Giddy House', an old armory that became slanted during the 1907 earthquake, providing a tangible link to the island's seismic and military past.
