Hibbert House, Kingston (Jamaica)

Weather…

Hibbert House, also known as Headquarters House, is a distinguished Georgian townhouse located on Duke Street in Kingston. Built in 1755 by Thomas Hibbert, a wealthy merchant and slave trader, the house was the result of a legendary bet between four businessmen to see who could build the most magnificent residence in the city. Hibbert won the contest with this grand brick and stone structure, which features fine mahogany woodwork and spacious rooms. Due to its size and central location, the building was later acquired by the government and served as the headquarters for the British Army on the island. From 1872 to 1960, it functioned as the meeting place for the Jamaican Legislature, making it a focal point for the country's political evolution. Today, it is the headquarters of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. The house is a rare survivor of the numerous fires and earthquakes that have affected Kingston over the centuries, preserving the architectural elegance of the mid-18th century.
