Seville Heritage Park (Jamaica)

Weather…

Seville Heritage Park is located on Jamaica's northern coast near St. Ann's Bay and marks the site of the island's first Spanish capital, Sevilla la Nueva, founded in 1509. The area is of immense historical significance as it encapsulates layers of Jamaican history, ranging from indigenous Taino settlements to the Spanish and later British colonial periods. Christopher Columbus ran aground in this bay in 1503 and spent an entire year here while awaiting rescue from Hispaniola. The current grounds house a museum within a restored 18th-century British Great House, showcasing artifacts recovered from the various eras of occupation. Visitors can view the remains of a Spanish sugar mill and the foundations of early churches, which are among the oldest Christian structures in the New World. The park serves as an educational center and a memorial to the complex interactions between European explorers, the indigenous population, and the African people brought to the island.
