Fort Augusta, situated on a peninsula at the western entrance to Kingston Harbour, is a massive coastal fortress built in the 1740s. It was designed to provide a crossfire with the batteries at Port Royal, effectively protecting the city of Kingston from naval invasion. The fort was named in honor of Princess Augusta, the mother of King George III. In 1763, the fort was the site of a catastrophic disaster when a lightning strike hit the powder magazine, which contained 3,000 barrels of gunpowder. The resulting explosion destroyed much of the fort and killed about 300 people. Despite this tragedy, the fortification was rebuilt and served as a major military garrison throughout the 19th century. In the mid-20th century, the site was converted into a prison and currently functions as Jamaica's only correctional facility for women. The thick limestone walls and the remains of the massive bastions can still be seen from the harbor, marking a strategic military site that has stood for nearly 300 years.
