St. Peter's Church, Port Royal (Jamaica)

Weather…

St. Peter's Church in Port Royal is a resilient monument to Jamaica's religious and maritime history. The current brick structure was completed in 1726 to replace several previous churches that were destroyed by fire and the catastrophic earthquake of 1692. It is famous for housing a magnificent silver communion service, which tradition claims was a gift from the privateer and later Governor, Sir Henry Morgan. The church's interior is decorated with numerous wall tablets and memorials dedicated to British naval officers, including those who served under Admiral Nelson. One of the most notable features in the churchyard is the tomb of Lewis Galdy, a French immigrant who miraculously survived being swallowed by the earth during the 1692 earthquake and subsequently spat out into the sea. The building's sturdy design has allowed it to survive numerous hurricanes and the 1907 earthquake, remaining an active center of worship for the Port Royal community.
