Doctor's Cave Beach
Doctor's Cave Beach in Montego Bay is widely regarded as one of the birthplaces of modern tourism in Jamaica, famous for its exceptionally calm and translucent waters. The beach was established in 1906 by Dr. Alexander James McCatty, who donated his private waterfront property to a bathing club, which was originally accessed through a limestone cave. In the 1920s, British osteopath Sir Herbert Barker claimed the waters possessed medicinal healing properties, an assertion that attracted wealthy travelers from across the globe. Although the eponymous cave was destroyed by a hurricane in 1932, the name persisted as the site evolved into an exclusive and world-renowned bathing club. Today, the beach is a key part of the Montego Bay Marine Park, ensuring the conservation of the surrounding coral reefs and diverse marine life. The pristine white sand is complemented by modern amenities, including changing rooms, beachside restaurants, and various water sports facilities. Its central location makes it a highly popular stop for cruise ship passengers and international vacationers alike.
