Guanaja Town is the main settlement of Guanaja Island, one of the three main islands of the Honduran Caribbean archipelago of Islas de la Bahía. The town is built almost entirely on a tiny offshore cay known as Cayo Bonacca, not on the main island itself. The dense layout on very limited land has produced a network of narrow walking lanes and water channels between wooden houses, which has earned the town the nickname "Caribbean Venice." Boats, small ferries and water taxis serve as the main means of transport. The economy is based on fishing, lobster diving, boat-building, tourism and small service businesses. English-speaking, Afro-Caribbean and British-rooted communities shape daily life. Guanaja Town is an exceptional example of a compact, water-defined island town in the Caribbean.
