Tortuga Island, or Île de la Tortue, is a mountainous island off the northwest coast of Haiti that gained worldwide fame as the primary base for pirates and buccaneers during the 17th century. The island owes its name to its unique shape, which resembles the shell of a sea turtle. During the Golden Age of Piracy, Tortuga served as a sanctuary for French and English adventurers who launched raids against Spanish galleons in the Caribbean Sea. Its strategic location near the Windward Passage made it a critical control point for maritime trade routes. The island's history is marked by numerous conquests involving Spain, France, and England before it eventually came under firm French control, administered by the French West India Company. Today, the island is part of the Nord-Ouest department and is noted for its pristine beaches and rugged natural landscape.
